Honiton Community College 6th Form’s Mighty Challenge to Raise Funds for Honiton Admiral Nurse Campaign

24 Triathlons in 24 Hours

Starting on March 1st, Sixth Form students and staff at Honiton Community College will be raising money for the Honiton Admiral Nurse campaign with a mighty challenge. Following the success of the 24hr cycle event last year that saw them raise nearly £2,000, the task they have set themselves this year is to complete 24 triathlons in 24 hours. Using the newly furnished School Fitness Centre they will be using a treadmill, a bike and a rowing machine in unison to attempt to reach their goal of 1,236km.

Luke Chambers – Chairperson of the Sixth Form Executive Committee explains that the students “unanimously voted to support and fundraise for the Admiral Nurse campaign. We understand that dementia is a condition that affects the majority of us both directly and indirectly and we also feel that this will support the community by raising money towards the £150k needed for an Admiral Nurse that will help and support those with dementia and their loved ones. Staff and students are training hard in the run up to the event and we are grateful for the local support that has been offered so far. It’s a real challenge and in the early hours of the morning it will be tough but last year was a great event with a real community spirit so we are hoping for the same this year. We are very excited and proud to be able to contribute to this very worthy campaign”

As you can imagine I was absolutely delighted to hear from Luke about this mighty challenge. From my regular work with our 6th Form in helping them to become more dementia aware I know first-hand what an inspiring group of young people they are. They are always so receptive to talking about what it is like to live with dementia and indeed statistically 1 in 3 of the students will know someone living with dementia. Students regularly volunteer at Honiton Memory Café and without exception they become much loved and valued members of the Memory Café family of friends.

I am full of admirations for each and every one of them for not only taking on this huge physical challenge of 24 triathlons in 24 hours but also for choosing to support our Honiton Admiral Nurse campaign by seeking sponsorship and showing how much our young people care about what it is like to live with dementia.

This challenge really shows how a community can come together across the generations with great compassion to support those in need.

There is also the added advantage of promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle for us all. I know my hours at the gym have increased since accepting the invitation to help launch the challenge on 1st March with a run on the treadmill!
